If you’ve toiled over writing your CV for several days, you’ll want it to get found when you post it on online job sites. Simply uploading it isn’t enough, you need to help recruiters find your CV online by writing it with search terms in mind.

What’s a synonym?
A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.
When you write your CV, you need to write it with recruiters and headhunters in mind. They will use a variety of key search terms and you need to ensure your CV flags up in their searches. What I mean by this is to think about what job titles and industry terminology hiring managers or recruiters might type in to a search bar. If you’re a project manager and only use the term project manager throughout your CV, you won’t rank very well (if at all) when the search term entered is contract manager, even though they are similar roles and you have all the skills and experience outlined in the job specification.
It’s quite easy to help recruiters find your CV online, you just need think a little creatively when it comes to job titles, industry key words and terminology. That’s where synonmyms come in very useful. Take a few moments to think about how else your job titles, etc may be referred to, what other names or terms would someone type in to a search bar?
If you’re suffering from mental block, use the thesaurus in your word processing program. In Microsoft Word, you just need to highlight the word you need an alternative for and hit shift + F7 and the thesaurus will pop up on the right-hand-side of your screen.
What if I’m Changing Careers?
If you’re changing careers, it makes it a little more difficult to help recruiters find your CV online but not impossible. One way to ensure the job title you aspire to appears in search results is to include an objective section, which outlines that you’re now looking to apply for the position of XYZ job title.
Include Industry-Specific Skills
Many roles advertised require candidates to have specific skills and experience to meet their job specification criteria so you need to make sure your CV clearly demonstrates the full scope of your skill set and experience. Take advantage of your knowledge and skill set to help recruiters find your CV online by including a skills section on your CV. Don’t just write a list of skills, state your competence level and try to reinforce each skill. This gem of information will enable you to ensure your CV contains relevant phrases searched for in your industry.
All you need to do is visit www.indeed.com/jobtrends and type in relevant search terms, separated by commas in the JobTrends search box. The website will then quickly analyse thousands and thousands of registered job descriptions and produce relative and absolute trends results for the search terms entered. It’s a great way to ensure the top search trend results appear somewhere in your CV.
Include your Town/City/Village Name on your CV
Whilst it’s very important to ensure the security of your personal details when uploading a CV online, it is essential that your CV contains at least the town you reside in so you show up in regional searches.
Incorporate Job- and Industry-Specific Tools and Techniques
Ensure you list industry or job-related tools and techniques you use on your CV. For example, including essential details such as your training and experience in areas such as Six Sigma, ITIL, Prince2 will help you to appear in search results.
List Relevant Industry and Professional Organisations
Always list membership of industry and professional organisations or relevant committees and societies you are a member of, including membership status, the full title and the acronym. It is particularly useful to include this information because many searches are performed looking for candidates with very specific requirements.
Proof of Industry Knowledge and Experience
One way to prove this is to ensure all relevant certifications, awards and licences are included on your CV. Again, this information may be enough to differentiate you from the competition and it also helps recruiters to find your CV online.
Note Industry Relevant Hardware and Software
Including details of the industry-related hardware and software you’re trained to use can be beneficial. It’s particularly useful to include it when it’s unique to your job or sector, such as Sage, CAD, SAP, etc.

Without the right keywords and information, you and your CV are invisible to searchers. Regardless of how experienced or well qualified you are, if your CV doesn’t contain pertinent details, you run the risk of not appearing in search results at all.
